CELLAR WITH THE SCENT OF HISTORY
PFALZGRAFENHOFKELLER
On October 1, 2016, the oldest wine cellar in Unstrut opened its doors to visitors and wine connoisseurs.
The Pfalzgrafenhofkeller from the late 10th and early 11th centuries - by far the oldest in the Saale-Unstrut wine region - is one of the earliest and most beautiful examples of use-oriented Romanesque architecture in Europe. The cellar is an ancient remnant of a Palatine court from the 10th century: a noble residence, a place of power and authority, but also a place for lavish banquets and celebrations of the court of the German King Heinrich des Fowler, the Emperor Otto I, Otto II . and Heinrich III. Here, in Weißenburg, around the year 1000, Adalbert Archbishop of Bremen was born - later one of the regents of Emperor Henry IV and an important political figure in the Holy Roman Empire.
After a year of restoration work, which was carried out and financed entirely by the Hahn family, a spectacular success was achieved. The basement is now free of cubic meters of rubbish and rubble from the construction work on the neighboring property, which was stored there by the previous owners. The floor and walls are being renovated using traditional methods and local materials. Electricity is renewed, two medieval windows opened, cleaned and new windows installed. Heavy steel doors from the mid-19th century have been cleaned, restored and returned to their original place.

With a capacity of 1200 bottles, the cellar is used as a house wine store, but also as an exhibition piece and is accessible to visitors to the estate as well as to tourists. It is also used for presentations of the PfalzMarke wine and product collection such as cheese, ham, olive oil and game products.
