Last week we passed a milestone in the history of Weissenburg and village of Zscheiplitz -- 940 anniversary of the death of Friedrich III, Count Palatine of Saxony, Count in Putelendorf, my 25th great grandfather.
He was the only son of Frederick II, Count Palatine of Saxony († 1088), and Hedwig of Bavaria. In 1081 he married Adelheid von Stade, the daughter of Count Lothar Udo II von Stade, Margrave of Nordmark.
In February of 1085 he was murdered by knights Dietrich and Ulrich von Deutleben and Reinhard von Reinstedt while hunting neat the village of Zscheiplitz. According to the chronicles, he was murderd by the orders of Ludwig, count in Thuringia. He too is my direct ancestor, as ironic as it may be.
Frederick's son, the one we call our German Hamlet, was born in the same year, in 1085. As his father, Frederick III died before Frederick II, it was he who became Frederick II's successor and heir as Count Palatine of Saxony.
